What: Alpaca Show
Where: Fredericksburg
When: May 7,8,9, 2010
Information: Larry Hauptrief, of Thousand Oaks Alpacas, HOME OF SNOWMASS XXXTREME, has invited the Blanco County 4-H’ers to be involved in this show. Gillespie County 4-H’ers will also participate in the show. As a participant, you will be showing the animals for the owners and giving input from the judging point of view.
Mr. Hauptrief and his associates will be offering a competition for those who want to train and show alpacas in sort of an obstacle course setting. The obstacle course competition is designed to allow the 4-H’ers to work with and train an alpaca before the show and demonstrate their training ablilties. There will be prizes for this part of the show.
In preparation for the obstacle course competition, various alpaca ranches in this area will offer the 4-H’ers the opportunity to spend time with an alpaca that they pick, say from our ranch, to work with and train. In some cases, we may allow the child to take the alpaca home to work with it for a period of time before the show date.
Mr. Hauptrief would like to bring a few alpacas to the 4-H Meetings, to share information on the background of alpacas. He will also bring some fleece off his animals and some products that have been made with alpaca fleece. He will show some of the ways fleece is processed to produce various products from it.
Mr. Hauptrief also has an adoption opportunity for 4-H’ers as well and will explain this offer further with the groups and on an individual basis.
If you are interested in participating in this show, or having Mr. Hauptrief bring an alpaca to your next meeting, please contact the Extension Office at 830-838-7167.
